Card Carrying Kiwi

My new library card. Note the Maori language translating “Auckland Council Libraries.”  Maori is one of three official languages in NZ: English, Sign-Language, and Maori.

I (Marsha) have always been partial to libraries, and am pleased to report that I am now a card carrying member of the Auckland Public Library and can check out up to 35 items!

We visited the Library in the Central Business District (CBD) just 6 days after we arrived because we saw that they had a free Thursday lunchtime concert series. The purpose of the concerts is to highlight their music collection, as well as their recently refurbished library. Both are magnificent, with plenty of room for exploration. On Oct. 5 the concert was a local amatuer string quartet. This week (Oct. 12) it was four wonderful student singers from the Auckland Music Conservatory. Their selections covered the gamut from Mozart to Sondheim, including an unknown-to-us humorous duet arguing about the benefit of Soup vs Beans from a Benjamin Britten opera about Paul Bunyan!

When we mentioned to the Music Librarian that we had never heard of Britten’s Opera, she smiled and said “We have a copy of the score here in the library.”

Maybe next week I’ll check it out!
